Use your blog to write about your experience with the Week 1 content.
An excellent post will include the following:
- How you first used social media, and how you use it now.
- Any positive and/or negative aspects of social media use that you have noticed arise in your personal or professional life.
- Anything that surprised/excited/alarmed you from the data included in the Pew Research and Internet Trends reports.
- What aspects of social media you are interested in exploring further after consuming the Week 1 content.
Once you have finished writing your post, please share the link here, as well as any challenges or questions you had while writing your post.
I remember when I first used MySpace for the first time, I was so happy to find another to connect to friends and of course choose a song for my profile along with a terrible template background. Back then it was all about collecting friends and seeing who was online so you could chat. Now I use social media more as news gathering tool. I connect less with friends using Facebook or Instagram but now use Twitter and LinkedIn to connect with organizers and news-makers.
In the newsroom, we have started judging reporters and anchors on their social media reach. This is a little alarming for me as it shouldn’t matter the size of a journalists following or how many comments they receive. They should be judged on their stories and work. The most popular online journalists in the Bay Area are not the investigative reporters, they are the ones that I believe share a little too much of their personal lives.
One data set from the Internet Trends post is how much more people are watching YouTube or online video compared to traditional television. Digital video is gaining quickly on tv, in 2018 28% of daily viewing time was online. That’s up 3 percent from the year before and 8 percent up from 2016. Those numbers will just get closer.
I’m excited to learn more about how brands are using social media to get their message out. Newsrooms and news organizations are also trying to harness social media to tell stories and I want to be on that front line.
