Why I’m going back to school

I love working in news. I never thought this would be my career but after 12 years of being newsrooms, I don’t think I could ever leave. So with that passion, I want to make sure I’m leading the charge on helping it transform and change for the digital age.

Right now, I’m a copy-editor/fill-in executive producer for NBC Bay Area. My usual day involves deciding stories to cover, aiding reporters, and copy-editing anchor scripts. Then when the newscast starts, I’m the person timing out the show and deciding what stories will get killed if we are run over. The most exciting time is when breaking news happens, whether that be fires (we’ve had a lot recently here in California), earthquakes, or politics.

I’m hoping to learn more about the future of communications and mass media. The times are changing with more people turning to other forms of news instead of just watching television or the newspaper. People are now using Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to get information. And who knows what next digital platform will emerge as the information leader. In an ever-shifting landscape, I want to help lead the changes instead of following them.
